Choosing the Right Course
Which first aid course do I need for my job?
It depends on your role. Most workplaces require HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid). If you work in childcare, schools, or outside school hours care, you need HLTAID012 which meets ACECQA requirements. If you only need CPR, HLTAID009 is sufficient. Mining, remote, and FIFO workers typically need HLTAID013. Designated first aid officers may need HLTAID014. If you're unsure, contact [email protected].
What is the difference between HLTAID009 and HLTAID011?
HLTAID009 covers CPR only - it takes around 90 minutes and costs $77. HLTAID011 covers full first aid including CPR, wound management, fractures, burns, bleeding, shock, and anaphylaxis. It takes 3-4 hours and costs $110. Most workplace first aid requirements mean HLTAID011, not just CPR.
Does HLTAID011 include CPR?
Yes. HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) includes CPR as a component. If you complete HLTAID011 you do not also need to separately hold HLTAID009.
What course do I need for childcare or OSHC?
HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) is the course required for early childhood educators, school staff, and outside school hours care workers. It meets ACECQA requirements and includes paediatric-specific content covering anaphylaxis, asthma, and seizure management in children.
Do I need a USI to enrol?
Yes. A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for all nationally recognised training. You can create one free at usi.gov.au. If you need help, call the USI Registry on 1300 857 536 (or +61 2 6218 0994 if overseas), available 8:30am-4:30pm ACDT Monday to Friday, excluding SA and national public holidays.
Course Delivery and What to Expect
Are courses run online or face-to-face?
Both options are available. Face-to-face courses are held in Perth and regional WA. Pre-course theory can be completed online before your face-to-face practical session. This is the express format that keeps your time commitment to a minimum while meeting all assessment requirements.
Can I complete the course online only?
No. First aid training requires a face-to-face practical component. This is a requirement under the training package - CPR and first aid skills must be assessed in person. You can complete theory online beforehand to reduce your face-to-face time.
What do I need to bring to class?
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in - you will be on the floor for CPR practice. Bring your USI number, photo ID, and any relevant workplace documentation if your employer requires it. Water is recommended for longer courses.
Can I do the course if I have a physical limitation?
Contact us before booking at [email protected]. Britt has experience adapting assessments where possible. Some components such as CPR assessment have minimum standard requirements set by the training package - we'll be upfront about what adjustments can and can't be made.
Is there a paper-based option instead of online theory?
Yes. Paper-based pre-reading is available for people who prefer not to complete online learning. Contact us before booking to arrange this.
When will I get my certificate?
Certificates are issued within 24 hours of successful completion for most courses.
Renewal and Validity
How often do I need to renew my first aid certificate?
HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is valid for 3 years. HLTAID012 and HLTAID014 follow the same validity. CPR (HLTAID009) should be renewed annually - the Australian Resuscitation Council and ANZCOR recommend annual CPR renewal to maintain skill retention.
Does first aid expire?
Yes. HLTAID011 certificates are valid for 3 years. After that, your certificate is no longer current for most workplace compliance purposes. CPR components should be refreshed annually even within a current first aid certificate period. Safe Work Australia and most WHS regulations require current certificates.
Can I renew early without waiting for my certificate to expire?
Yes. You can complete a renewal course at any time. Many people choose to renew before they start a new job or when their employer requests it, even if the certificate hasn't technically expired yet.
My certificate expired a few years ago - do I need to start from scratch?
No. You complete the same course as someone doing it for the first time. There's no shortened pathway for lapsed certificates - you do the full course again. This ensures your skills are current.
Group Training and Workplace Bookings
Can you come to our workplace?
Yes. Mobile group training is available across Perth, regional WA, and Australia-wide. Groups of 4 or more qualify for group rates. Visit the Group Training page for details and to send an enquiry.
How many people do you need for group training?
A minimum of 4 people. There's no maximum per session - larger groups can be split into concurrent or sequential sessions.
How far in advance do we need to book?
For planned workplace training, 2-4 weeks is ideal. For urgent compliance needs such as a new staff member, site audit, or last-minute deployment, contact us directly - we accommodate urgent bookings where possible.
Do you offer mental health first aid as part of the training?
First Aid Courses can be bundled with Mental Health First Aid training through REACHAU (Regional Education and Career Help Australia). This is available for group bookings. Contact us for a combined package quote.
